How to use
  1. Let your skincare or primer settle for a minute. Shake the bottle.
  2. One pump is enough for the whole face. Dot it on the forehead, cheeks, nose and chin.
  3. Blend from the center of the face out, with fingers for the sheerest finish, a damp sponge for a natural one or a dense brush for the most coverage.
  4. For more coverage, add a second thin layer only where you want it. Two thin layers build to full; one thick layer does not.
  5. Check the match on your jawline in daylight, not on your hand. Set the T-zone with powder if your skin runs oily.
  • Store below 30 °C, away from direct sunlight and out of a hot car
  • Keep caps and compacts closed, and never share lip or eye products
  • Replace mascara and liquid liners three months after opening, everything else within twelve months

Under three lights

Shown: 230N

Lanternlight Skin Foundation, shade 230N: the same swipe on a gray shade card in daylight, in warm indoor light and under phone flash
  1. DaylightIndirect, mid-morning, by a north-facing window. The honest one for undertone.
  2. Warm indoor lightThe warm bulbs of a living room in the evening. Everything leans golden.
  3. Phone flashHead on, at arm's length. Cold and direct, where flashback shows.

A swatch of the shade on a gray shade card, photographed three times and not retouched for color. It shows the shade, not your skin: use it to compare shades with each other. How the Light Test works

Questions

Asked about Lanternlight Skin Foundation

How do I read the shade names?

The number is the depth and the letter is the undertone. There are twelve depths, from 100, the lightest, to 430, the deepest, and four undertones: C is cool, N is neutral, W is warm and O is olive. So 250W and 250O are equally deep, and only the undertone changes.

How do I know if I am olive?

A common sign is that warm foundations look orange on you and cool ones look gray or ashy. Olive sits between them, with a soft green cast. If that sounds familiar, compare the W and the O at your depth in the Light Test photos, or wear both with the Shade Match Duo.

Will the shade change during the day?

Every shade is oxidation tested at four hours: we read the color again after it has been on skin for half a working day. If foundations usually turn orange on you by lunch, it is worth knowing that the undertone may have started a touch too warm, so look at the N or the O at the same depth.

What if I pick the wrong shade?

That is what the Shade Promise is for. Within 45 days you can exchange it once for another shade of the same foundation, even if you have worn it, and the return label is on us. It starts in the returns portal: choose Shade Promise exchange and pick the new shade.

Is it matte or dewy?

Neither. The finish is satin: skin-like, with a soft sheen and no shine. If you want dewy and sheer, that is the Dewlight Skin Tint.

Is it vegan and fragrance-free?

Yes, both. We do not claim that it is non-comedogenic or hypoallergenic, and we do not publish a cruelty-free certification, so we will not tell you it is any of those. The full ingredient list is on this page.

How long does a bottle last?

About three months of daily wear at one pump a day. If yours is running out much faster, you are probably using two or three pumps; one really does cover a face.

Shade 250O · Medium to tan skin, olive undertone

The first olive that is actually olive

Every warm foundation I have owned goes orange on me and every cool one goes gray. 250O is the first bottle that looks like my neck in daylight and in my car mirror. I did the minis first and I am glad I did, because I was sure I was a W.

    Verified buyer

Shade 410N · Deep to rich skin, neutral undertone

No red cast on deep skin

Deep shades usually lean red on me by the afternoon. 410N stayed exactly where it started through a ten-hour shift. One pump, dense brush, a little powder on my nose.

  3. Hannah K.

    Verified buyer

Shade 100N · Very fair skin, neutral undertone

    Fair without being pink

I am very fair and most light shades are either pink or yellow. 100N is neither. It looks like skin, and it photographs well with flash, which I did not expect.

    Verified buyer

Shade 230N · Medium skin, neutral undertone

Ran a touch warm, exchange was easy

230W looked right on the page and a little too golden on my face by midday. I used the exchange for 230N, which is perfect. Four stars because I wish I had ordered the minis first, like the page told me to.

Shade 150W · Light skin, warm undertone

Stays the same color all day

I checked it against the bottle at lunch out of curiosity and it had not shifted. Satin is the right word for the finish. Not flat, not shiny.

Shade 350W · Deep skin, warm undertone

    The three-light photos are honest

What sold me was the flash photo of 350W. It looked on me the way it looked there. I have never been able to say that about an online swatch.

Shade 310O · Tan skin, olive undertone

    Good shade, the pump clogs

Color match in 310O is excellent. My pump started sticking after about six weeks and I have to wipe the nozzle every few days or it spits. The foundation itself I would give five.

  8. Elise W.

    Verified buyer

Shade 130C · Fair to light skin, cool undertone

    One pump really is enough

I was using three pumps and wondering why it felt heavy. One, spread with a damp sponge, looks like my skin on a good day.

    Verified buyer

Shade 210O · Light to medium skin, olive undertone

Clings to dry patches if I skip moisturizer

On days I moisturize properly it is beautiful. On dry winter skin it catches around my nose. Not the foundation's fault exactly, but worth knowing. I use the skin tint on those days.

  10. Desiree L.

    Verified buyer

Shade 330W · Tan to deep skin, warm undertone

Finally matched my chest and my face

My face is lighter than my body, and 330W splits the difference so I do not look like I am wearing a mask. Bought a second bottle as a backup.

  11. Katarzyna D.

    Verified buyer

Shade 230C · Medium skin, cool undertone

    Cool and deep enough

Cool undertones in medium depths are rare. 230C does not turn peachy on me. I wear it with a little setting powder and nothing else.
